The sustainability of the year-round island communities in the Gulf of Maine was once framed as a conservation issue. Today, we have a much broader, human ecological understanding of the social, economic, and cultural dynamics of these communities—and of the challenges that threaten their future.
The first collaborative project of the Fund for Maine Islands is the Collaborative for Island Energy Research & Action (CIERA), which is sending a group of Maine island residents and a class of COA students to the world renowned Samsø Energy Academy in Samsø, Denmark.
